What's the best day of the week to fly?
Tuesday and Wednesday consistently have the lowest delay rates and the fewest crowded flights. BTS data shows that Tuesday flights have an on-time rate roughly 3-5 percentage points higher than Sunday or Friday flights. Saturday is also relatively good for reliability, though Sunday is one of the worst days due to high volume from weekend travelers returning home.
The worst days: Friday evening and Sunday afternoon/evening are the most delay-prone time slots of the entire week. This is when business travelers and weekend travelers overlap, creating maximum airport congestion. Holiday weekends amplify this — the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are historically the highest-volume travel days of the year.
For price: Tuesday and Wednesday are typically the cheapest days to fly, while Friday and Sunday are the most expensive. If you have schedule flexibility, a Tuesday departure and a Wednesday or Saturday return generally gives you the best combination of price, reliability, and lower airport stress. That said, a 6 AM Friday flight will still beat a 5 PM Tuesday flight for on-time performance — time of day matters more than day of week.
