Question 1

What is the minimum connection time at Fairbanks International (FAI)?

Accepted Answer

The minimum connection time at FAI is 60 minutes for domestic flights and 120 minutes for international connections. FAI has an on-time rate of 82%, and when flights are delayed, the average delay is 56 minutes. We recommend adding at least 15-30 minutes of buffer above the minimum, especially during winter months or afternoon travel.

Question 2

Is a 45 minute layover enough at FAI?

Accepted Answer

A 45-minute layover at FAI is risky. About 48% of travelers miss their connection with only 45 minutes. We recommend at least 113 minutes.

Question 3

Is a 1-hour layover enough at FAI?

Accepted Answer

A 60-minute layover at FAI is risky. About 17% of travelers with this connection time miss their flight. We recommend at least 113 minutes.

Question 4

How long of a layover should I book at FAI?

Accepted Answer

For domestic flights at FAI, we recommend at least 113 minutes to comfortably make your connection. For international flights, allow at least 120 minutes. Early morning flights tend to have fewer delays, so your connection is safer if your first leg departs before 8 AM.

Question 5

What happens if I miss my connection at FAI?

Accepted Answer

If both flights are on the same ticket, the airline must rebook you on the next available flight at no extra charge. If you booked separate tickets, you're responsible for rebooking costs. At FAI, if you miss your connection due to an airline delay, ask the gate agent about rebooking and meal vouchers. If the airline caused the missed connection and it results in an overnight stay, request hotel accommodation.
