What is a minimum connection time (MCT)?

Minimum connection time is the shortest layover an airline will sell you at a given airport. It accounts for deplaning, walking between gates, and sometimes re-clearing security. MCTs vary by airport — a tight connection at ORD is very different from one at PHX.

How long of a layover should I book?

For domestic connections, book at least 60-90 minutes at large hubs (ORD, LAX, ATL, DFW) and 45-60 minutes at smaller airports. For international connections requiring customs/immigration, allow 2-3 hours minimum.

What happens if I miss my connection?

If both flights are on the same ticket, the airline must rebook you on the next available flight at no charge. If you booked separate tickets, the airline has no obligation — you'll need to buy a new ticket.
